NY Gov. Predicts Trump Won’t Be Welcomed in NYC
(UnitedVoice.com) – One minute, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D-NY) is praising President Trump and the federal government’s response to COVID-19. The next, he’s tearing him down. The latest war of words between the two leaders comes on the heels of a memo to the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) dated Wednesday, September 2.
In the memo, the president is ordering the federal government to limit federal dollars to cities defunding police as violent crimes rise.
On Trump’s radar, New York City leads the way, followed by Portland, Seattle, and Washington, DC. The four cities cited by Trump continue to experience riots, destruction, or an increase in overall violence as the mayors and city councils call to defund their police departments.
According to the latest statistics, New York City has experienced a 177% increase in shootings in July 2020 compared to the same time period in 2019. President Trump offered federal assistance to help curb the violence, but Cuomo and Mayor Bill de Blasio (D-NY) refused. Then, in July, the New York City Council cut $1 billion from the NYPD’s $6 billion annual budget.
Trump to Withdraw Funding
According to the New York City Committee on Finance, the federal government gives the city $7 billion a year in federal aid. In Trump’s memo to the OMB, he ordered the agency:
“To ensure that Federal funds are neither unduly wasted nor spent in a manner that directly violates our Government’s promise to protect life, liberty, and property, it is imperative that the Federal Government review the use of Federal funds by jurisdictions that permit anarchy, violence, and destruction in America’s cities.”
My Administration will do everything in its power to prevent weak mayors and lawless cities from taking Federal dollars while they let anarchists harm people, burn buildings, and ruin lives and businesses. We’re putting them on notice today. @RussVought45

Trump appears to be saying to cities struggling with riots, destruction, and crime that if they don’t want federal help to get the violence under control, then they don’t need the federal government’s money, either.
In April and May, Cuomo praised Trump for the federal government’s response to the needs of NYC. However, on Wednesday night, he changed his song and dance. Instead of responding to Trump’s direct allegations of lawlessness in New York City and his refusal to accept federal help, Cuomo got deeply personal. During an emergency press briefing that turned into a rant session, Cuomo tore into Trump and flipped flopped.
Governor Cuomo all but physically threatened the President of the United States. He said Trump couldn’t have enough bodyguards to protect him in the city. He further claimed that Trump was trying to kill New York City since the day he was elected, and the city rejected him.
In a language and style similar to the president’s, Cuomo referred to Trump as a clown and a tabloid cartoon. He took shots at the Trump family, and then blamed the president’s supposed negligence for the high COVID-19 death toll in New York.
Cuomo has never accepted responsibility for his own negligence. The US Department of Justice (DOJ) is currently investigating the governor’s handling of COVID-19 nursing home deaths in New York.
Sensing he may have crossed a line, Cuomo walked back his statements and tried to clarify the bodyguard comment. He said New Yorkers would never forget Trump tried to kill his hometown.
Despite Cuomo’s outrage, the president seems resolute that he’s not going to empower Liberal governors and mayors in allowing the destructive riots in their cities.
